Shoppers Hunting for Bargains the Day After Christmas

Aired December 26, 2000 - 10:31 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: All right, if you didn't have to work and you're organized, chances are you're going to head out to the malls and get some of the bargains that are out there. It's a big shopping time -- day after Christmas.

Let's check in with our Deborah Feyerick, who is at a mall in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Deborah, how are things looking out there?

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Daryn, now the mall is beginning to fill up. And we popped into Brooks Brothers just a short time ago: A number of people were exchanging gifts -- they needed different sizes -- but there were also a lot of people just buying. They were trying to take advantage of some of these sales.

You can see here: 70 percent off. Now, that's of the original ticketed prices. So what that effectively means is that they may have had a pre-Christmas sale that was marked down 30 percent, and now they're adding more discounts on top of that. We're seeing that happen at a lot of different stores.

We are joined by one shopper, Jeff, here, and his daughter, Valerie, from South Orange, New Jersey.

You're here watching your daughter. Your wife is?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Shopping, taking advantage of the discounts, doing some shopping that she didn't get done before Christmas.

FEYERICK: Is the items that you're purchasing -- are these additional items, are these things you knew were going to be going on sale?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, they're things that we pretty much expected after Christmas would be on sale, and instead of buying them before Christmas and unwrapping them, we thought we'd take advantage of the 70 percent discounts and get some things we wanted to get.

FEYERICK: Terrific. So you got here at about what time?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: About 9 o'clock. We were the -- it seemed like the first people here. Nobody was around, and it was good.

FEYERICK: And you're going to stay here until about what time?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Another hour or so, and then we've got another mall to hit after this, so we're doing a lot of shopping today.

FEYERICK: So you're bracing yourself. You know what to expect.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, it's fun: I didn't expect it to be this, sort of, empty. I mean, it's fun.

FEYERICK: Great, and you've got a -- and Valerie here is very well behaved, and we hope she stays that way for the rest of your trip. Jeff, Valerie, thank you very much.

Again, the stores here really hoping that they'll get a big last- minute push within this week. They had some great Christmas sales. And again, everything really is just marked down, and that's what people are taking advantage of.

One man we even spoke to said he's starting all of his Christmas shopping today -- Daryn.

KAGAN: Very nice. I hope he gets some nice bargains and has some understanding friends and family.

Deborah Feyerick, thank you very much for that live report, from Elizabeth, New Jersey.
