Baby Rescued After Being Abandoned in Airport Toilet

Aired December 28, 2000 - 9:20 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: And a story, another story, of a life saved, this one a newborn baby rescued from a toilet in a public restroom.

We get the details from reporter Michael Rossen (ph) of CNN affiliate KUTV.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: May I have your attention, please: Delta flight...

MICHAEL ROSSEN, KUTV REPORTER (voice-over): An unidentified Washington woman was changing planes in Salt Lake en route to Los Vegas. She went into labor and gave birth in an airport toilet.

CARLA WHITAKER, RESCUED BABY: And that's when I looked through the crack in the door, and I could see these little legs in the toilet. And I've never been faced with anything like this in my life. And I didn't know what to do. And I just thought, I'm going to have to climb under the toilet -- I mean under the bathroom stall. I said, ma'am, you've got to let me in, please let me in.

ROSSEN: The mother opened the door, and Carla pulled the baby out of the toilet.

WHITAKER: That is a moment that I don't think I'll ever learn to forget. And I picked the baby up, and I -- I noticed he was blue, and he was cold. As I was holding the baby up to me, I was actually holding the cord, because, of course, the baby is still attached to the cord, and -- and at that moment, the placenta fell.

ROSSEN: Carla was joined by her daughters and one of their friends, all trying to save the baby's life. Julie's bobby pen was used to tie off the umbilical cord. The are girls are angry at the baby's mother.

JULIE, RESCUED BABY: Why couldn't she be holding it, instead of it being in the toilet, because there's so many people that would love the baby if she doesn't want to love it?

ROSSEN: Police are investigating. They're trying to figure out the mother's intentions.

WHITAKER: I can't judge her. It's not fair of any of us to judge her. I just hope that she can get the help that she needs.

ROSSEN: Karl focuses on the joy of a life saved and the Christmas message that she gets from this remarkable birth.

WHITAKER: Like I related to the Christ child when He was born: It wasn't -- He was just a little manger somewhere, all cold. We were all instruments there to try to save that baby's life: That baby has a purpose, that baby is meant to be in somebody's home someday, to bless somebody's life, and to fulfill his dreams.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

LIN: That report from Michael Rossen of CNN affiliate KUTV.
