| Morning NewsCNN 20: Rocker's Comments PublishedAired December 28, 2000 - 10:20 a.m. ETTHIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) FRANK BUCKLEY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: This "Sports Illustrated" article came out, and people went nuts here. People in New York had a hate-hate relationship with John Rocker to begin with. John Rocker seemed to hate them, New Yorkers seemed to hate him right back. In the article, John Rocker seemed to offend just about every group possible, and people here took it pretty personally. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) HENRY AARON, FORMER MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER: I was hurt because baseball has made some tremendous progress in the last few years. Rocker speaks for himself. Rocker, as I mentioned before, does not speak for the Braves. BUCKLEY: Rockers said comments in "Sports Illustrated," in which he made disparaging remarks about immigrants, Asian-Americans, gays, people with AIDS, young mothers and others, were not made with malice. JOHN ROCKER, ATLANTA BRAVES: I also feel that the people of New York, as well as the media, have misjudged me. I am not the evil person that has been portrayed. (END VIDEO CLIP) BUCKLEY: There was a great deal of anticipation for his appearance here in New York. People were wondering how it would go the first time he got back to New York and actually appeared in Shea Stadium. And in the end, people booed him, and he did what he did. He pitched his game, and that was that. (END VIDEOTAPE) TO ORDER A VIDEO OF THIS TRANSCRIPT, PLEASE CALL 800-CNN-NEWS OR USE OUR SECURE ONLINE ORDER FORM LOCATED AT www.fdch.com |
