Fitness Professional Robert Gothard Discusses Getting in Shape

Aired January 1, 2001 - 9:27 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Now that is a resolution that I think I can keep, sitting on the couch and gaining weight, and not doing anything productive. But if your New Year's resolutions are a little bit more, and you want to get off the couch and get in shape. We are going to go back to the gym, and bring back in Robert Gothard, who now has gone over to the weights area. And he still has Wendy with him.

Absolutely.

KAGAN: Poor Wendy is working so hard on this New Year's morning.

Wendy is the task master. We are going to get everybody around the world off the couch today. We are just going to show you simple things, like Wendy is just doing bicep curls. Of course, here at Crunch Fitness we have a lavish facility, but we are going to show you some things if you don't have a lavish facility. You can get out today and do something. Tone up the muscles. And ladies, don't worry, you are not going to build huge muscles. You just don't have the testosterone and genetics for it. So don't worry. We are going to tone and make them nice and tone and sleek for the spring dresses and outfits. How about that?

KAGAN: That's a good idea. Robert, I think every woman I know, every woman here at CNN would love to have arms that look like Wendy's. What about, specifically, so you don't get that like French flag flapping in the breeze thing, where your tricep area is?

GOTHARD: We have a great exercise for tricep. Let me sit these down.

Wendy, if I could have you stand up please, and we are going to do have you doing tricep kickbacks. How about that? Now, notice the shoulder and the elbow are even, and we are coming straight back, specifically targeting the tricep area. Again, she is using eight pounds, which is a lot of weight, but Wendy can handle it. She teaches umpteen number of classes a week and she is just a machine.

KAGAN: How much do you have to work out to look like Wendy?

GOTHARD: You know, she's a fitness professional. So it is kind of like an accountant having a balanced checkbook. She is going to fit from here on out. Most of us can shoot for this type of goal. And there's another way to hit even the back.

Wendy, if you want to show them one-arm rows.

Now, what we selected here is spry too, this is something people can go out and purchase, very inexpensively, and they can do toning exercises at home. There are books and videos to show you how to do. So if you are not really not ready to make that next step and go into a facility like Crunch, you are a little intimidated, you can do things at home to help you just get started. But get started and do something today.

My prayer is everybody that can hear my voice: Get up and do something today, even if it just going for a walk for 30 minutes.

KAGAN: Sound good. I think we can commit to that. Robert Gothard, thank you much; Wendy also. You aren't done yet. Coming up ahead in MORNING NEWS, we will be talking to you about aerobic activity and also a little bit of nutrition.
