Transition of Power: Bush Expected to Announce Latest Choices for Top Administration Posts

Aired January 2, 2001 - 10:08 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: There are 18 days remaining until the inauguration of President-elect George W. Bush, and he is moving forward with his transition plans. Today, we are expecting to hear an announcement on his latest choices for top administration posts.

CNN national correspondent Tony Clark is in Austin, Texas, with the latest.

Tony, good morning.

TONY CLARK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Daryn.

You know, that president-elect has said that he wants to finish his top appointments to his Cabinet by the end of this week. And he may make a step towards that today. He has a press conference 3:00 Eastern today over a the Driscoll Hotel, that is the same sight where, before Christmas, he announced some of his Cabinet nominees. And it's expected that he may make similar announcements today.

There are still three Cabinet positions that are open. Those are the secretary of energy, secretary of labor, and secretary of transportation. And despite a stated goal of wanting to have at least one Democrat in his Cabinet, so far the Cabinet makeup that the president-elect has put forth has been entirely made up of Republicans.

Just a short time ago, one of his press aides said they are still very hopeful that they can have a Democrat in part of the Cabinet. They said the president-elect has reached out to Democrats, and he said it is time to simply wait and see if President-elect Bush is able to find a Democrat.

The thought that the Cabinet appointee may be made today is added to the fact that Vice President-elect Cheney is also in town. He will have lunch today over at the Governor's Mansion with President-elect Bush. And then they're expected to go over to the Driscoll Hotel for that announcement.

One other possible announcement that should be -- or could be coming today, Larry Lindsey, who is the economic adviser to President- elect Bush, there could be an announcement made that he would be one of the top economic advisers to the president when he is in the White House. That would come just a day before a two-day economics meeting here in Austin, as President-elect Bush meets with various economic business and high-tech leaders. That happens tomorrow and on Thursday, as I say, here in Austin.

And Daryn, two other nominations that still have to be made that had not been made, U.N. ambassador and the director of the CIA, and, as you know, the president-elect has been looking for people with experience for most of the posts. Those are both posts that his father, former President Bush, once held during his career -- Daryn.

KAGAN: And Tony, last we checked, I don't think the elder George Bush does have a job right now. But I think he is retired and happy. Tony Clark, in Austin, Texas, thank you very much.
