Jim Morris Offer His Impressions of George W. Bush

Aired January 2, 2001 - 11:36 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Now that we know who is going to be occupying the White House for the next four years, people who make their living satirizing politicians also have a much better idea at exactly whom they want to poke fun at. We welcome back impressionist Jim Morris. We saw him during the election. And he is joining us now from Dallas, Texas.

Jim, good morning.

JIM MORRIS, POLITICAL IMPRESSIONIST: Good morning, Daryn.

KAGAN: I think you might have heard that later today, President- elect George W. Bush will be naming some more Cabinet nominees. What you do think of his choices so far?

MORRIS: I think they've been pretty interesting. I was -- I -- as a comedian, I sort of root for people I can already imitate. I was hoping someone like Andy Rooney would get appointed to the EPA.

You think this water tastes funny?

But that was not to happen to be. Actually, they are usually not well-enough known to imitate, most Cabinet appointments. But I think the president-elect, I like my choices. I do. I like my choice.

You ever notice, every time he makes an appointment. He's a good man, a good man, a man of judgment. Everybody's a man of judgment. Judgment, a good man. I -- I think today maybe we're going to appoint a Democrat. Go for some bipartisanship, maybe Pat Moynihan, somebody like that.

Absolutely, not. I need that like a hole in the head. I have done it.

KAGAN: Soon you will not have...

MORRIS: Actually he worked for Richard Nixon, talk about bipartisanship. I showed them how it was done.

KAGAN: Soon you will not have. Well, you don't have Richard Nixon to kick around anymore, and soon you are not going to have Patrick Moynihan. Hillary Clinton is taking his place.

The first 100 days that George W. Bush... MORRIS: You are talking about my first lady. She wasn't my first, but I married her anyway -- just kidding. It wasn't my last either.

KAGAN: OK, it is getting a little hot in here, Jim. Take me into the first 100 days of George W. Bush's presidency. What are the first issues that he will tackle do you think?

MORRIS: I think we are going to look at defense, beefing up defense. We need to beef up arms for our allies, like Turkey, and beef and turkey. And I like the right wing of the turkey, but Trident submarine, four of the five nations surveyed recommend Trident for their navies to choose subs. So we are going to do some there.

Crime, faith-based executions, we are looking into that. I want to appeal to our better angels, not our darker impulses.

KAGAN: The new President Bush is going to have a great resource. He is going to have his father...

MORRIS: Dad.

KAGAN: Yeah, dad.

MORRIS: I go to him for advice. I said to him, I said, W., the first thing you have got to do is fill your Cabinet.

How do you start, munchies?

No, no, no, wait a second.

Hey, W., listen to me, I gave him some advice, my son, I said, hey, just follow directions and you'll be fine. I got all of my best people in there. Sure?

KAGAN: Sure you do. Jim Morris, it looks like you have a few years ahead of you of some good times as George W. Bush takes office. Thanks for joining us from Dallas, Texas, from Bush country, we should note.

MORRIS: Yes, it is. Happy new year.

KAGAN: To you too as well. Good to see you, once again. We will have you back. Thanks a lot, Jim Morris.
