Bush Expected to Announce More Appointments to Sub-Cabinet Level, White House Staff Level Positions

Aired January 4, 2001 - 11:01 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We are also standing by for President- elect George W. Bush. And with more on that, we can bring in our Tony Clark, who is standing by in Austin, Texas.

Tony, good morning once again.

TONY CLARK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Daryn. We may hear some more appointments to sub-Cabinet level and White House staff level positions. Associated Press reporting this morning that Joe Allbaugh, who was President-elect Bush's campaign manager, while he was governor he was chief of staff, to be named the head of FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Allbaugh has been with the governor for years, since his first gubernatorial race. Allbaugh, who is 48 years old, from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, active in some 39 campaigns around the country. As I say, he is part of the so- called "Iron Triangle" of President-elect Bush.

The other part, another part of that Iron Triangle, Karl Rove, who is his chief strategist. Rove goes back to the days in 1978, when Bush made an unsuccessful run for the Congress. He is known as the chief strategist for the campaign. He is expected to be named as a senior White House adviser with a wide portfolio to handle both political and strategic matters in a Bush White House.

One other possible nomination we may hear today, John Taylor, for the -- to head the Council of Economic Advisers. That would be because today is a high-tech meeting for the president-elect. He is meeting with more than a dozen executives from high-tech industries, talking about the business climate, also talking about education reform to channel more students into the high-tech industry.

KAGAN: Tony Clark, we have to interrupt Tony Clark there a little bit.
