What Will Laura Bush Wear to the Inauguration?

Aired January 10, 2001 - 11:22 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Well, the inauguration just days away. The eyes of the world will not be resting exclusively on the new president at the inauguration. The new first lady will be in the spotlight as well.

The big question, what is she going to wear? Laura Bush has chosen a designer that she has worked with before for state inaugurations in Texas. And we're going to go to New York now to talk about the selections of fashion with Bridget Foley from "Women's Wear Daily."

Bridget, good morning.

BRIDGET FOLEY, "WOMEN'S WEAR DAILY": Good morning.

KAGAN: Let's get right to the good stuff, the gowns, the ball gowns. What is Ms. Bush going to be wearing?

FOLEY: Mrs. Bush is wearing a dress by a designer called Michael Faircloth. He's a designer who she has been working with for some time. It is red chantilly lace beaded with frosty crystals over silk georgette.

KAGAN: It looks beautiful. From what we've seen of Mrs. Bush so far -- of course, she's a former librarian. She tends to have a conservative style, wearing a lot of suits. Is this a bit of a stretch for her?

FOLEY: I wouldn't call it a stretch. I think it's a dramatic dress. There's no question strong color is dramatic, and it's also curvaceous. It's a linear dress that (UNINTELLIGIBLE) a little bit of a train. So there's a sense there's an essential attitude to it.

So I think that it's a bold stroke, no question, but I think, I'm sure she must feel that she'll feel comfortable in the dress.

KAGAN: And what...

FOLEY: And every...

KAGAN: Go ahead.

FOLEY: Well, I was going to say every woman knows the anxiety involved in picking the right dress for a big event, and if we could all just magnify that feeling by a thousand or a million, that must be what went into the selection of this dress.

KAGAN: Absolutely. And you know, bottom line there are going to be some people who love it and some people who don't. So you have...

FOLEY: Absolutely. The critics will be out there.

KAGAN: That they will. What about what she might wear to -- for the swearing-in ceremony?

FOLEY: Well, it's -- I mean, I suppose she has the right to change her mind at the last minute, but she's supposed to be wearing a peacock blue suit and dress combination, again by Michael Faircloth. It is a, again, a lean suit, a collarless jacket -- a collarless jacket with no blouse, and it's a very bright peacock blue. So Michael discussed taking the color down a bit by putting a special brown trim on the collar and the cuffs.

KAGAN: And what's your opinion of what's she chosen so far?

FOLEY: I think that -- I think that, you know, first ladies tread a fine line. We want them to be, you know, sheik and sophisticated; we don't want them to look frivolous. And I think both of these looks fit the bill. I think that they're -- you know, a suit tends to be the way first ladies choose to go for day, and I think this is a very, very smart sheik choice. And the dress is beautiful to me.

KAGAN: This is also, it's going to be the first time that a lot of Americans really pay attention to Mrs. Bush. Looking back at the last first lady now, Senator Clinton, how did we see her style change?

FOLEY: Well, I think that Hillary Clinton certainly became far more sophisticated. She became a little more daring.

It's funny, the first inaugural gown, Hillary Clinton wore a big -- a full-skirted dress in a deep blue violet by a young woman named Sarah Phillips. I think if most of us think back on that, we think that that's probably not the way we envisioned Hillary, you know, by and large.

She certainly evolved her look and tried a lot -- experimented with a lot of different designers, and now we almost always see her in pants, which is a great look for her.

KAGAN: It works.

FOLEY: Very sheik. And (UNINTELLIGIBLE) very sheik, very sophisticated.

KAGAN: Mrs. Bush has been in the public eye in Texas, but this is going to be a whole new stage for her, and you think that we'll also see an evolution as she kind of finds her place and what really makes her comfortable.

FOLEY: Well, of course we will. I mean, already Michael has said that she traditionally has been more comfortable in neutral tones, quieter tones, but she was really interested in picking, selecting looks that would play well for television and cameras. And so she's experimenting that way, and I'm sure she's feeling more confident with color now as she's gone before the cameras more often.

And of course, I mean, we all, all women like to, you know, experiment and change our look every now and then, and I'm sure she'll be no different. Of course, the scrutiny on her will be tremendous.

KAGAN: And Mrs. Bush is not the only woman in the Bush household. Of course, there are two young ladies, the Bush daughters. Do we have any clue as to what they'll be wearing on the big day?

FOLEY: The two daughters will be wearing -- supposedly are going to be wearing gowns by Susan Dell, who is again a Texas designer, but we haven't seen them yet. So, that's very exciting, to wait and see what they'll be wearing.

KAGAN: OK. And they are twins, and I'm sure they each want to have their own different look working as well.

FOLEY: Absolutely.

KAGAN: Well, thanks for joining us, Bridget Foley, from "Women's Wear Daily." It will be fun to see all these fashions in person.

FOLEY: It will be great. We'll be watching.
