Update on Possible New Bush Cabinet Appointees

Aired January 11, 2001 - 10:20 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Let's go to Washington now. CNN's Eileen O'Connor in Washington at the White House on word on another nomination for Bush president-elect position here -- Eileen.

EILEEN O'CONNOR, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, sources telling us, Leon, that Robert Zoellick will be named as the United States trade representative at an event that's happening at 2:45 this afternoon. Ari Fleischer, the spokesman, said he won't speculate on who is going to be named, but he is saying there will be a personnel event this afternoon. Now sources are telling us Robert Zoellick is an old, experienced hand from former Republican administration. He will be named as U.S. trade rep. Sources do not say whether that position will be raised to the level of a cabinet post, which it is currently in the Clinton administration. Also,

The background of Mr. Zoellick lends to this position. He was a former deputy chief of staff in the Bush administration, served as an undersecretary at State for economics there. In the Reagan administration served in various post under James Baker. So a lot of experience here.

Also with that event sources saying Eloise Anderson could be named as labor secretary. She's definitely the most likely pick for labor. She's an African-American woman from California, director of social services under two GOP governors from California and Wisconsin.

So we're looking forward to these announcements this afternoon at 2:45 -- Leon.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: All right, thanks very much, Eileen O'Connor, with that quick update from Washington.
