Reagan Recovery: Former President Sits Up in Chair, Eats Ice Cream

Aired January 16, 2001 - 11:43 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Doctors in Southern California say that former President Ronald Reagan continues to impress them, as he recovers from hip surgery.

For the latest on Mr. Reagan's condition, let's go now to CNN's Jim Hill, who's standing by live this morning in Santa Monica.

Jim, what's the latest?

JIM HILL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Leon, if this were a classroom instead a hospital, I think that you could say that the former president's getting straight A's when it comes to the class of recovery. At least, that's what we are being told from his doctors and the official spokeswoman for the Reagan office.

The former president is now able to now sit up. He's done that at least two times, possibly three. We are told that his appetite continues to improve. He is eating well, and he's having ice cream for dessert. We also have been told ice cream is one of his favorite foods.

He continues to need very little pain medication. Doctors have said quite often, patients need two or three injections of such medication every day. The ex-president, on the other hand, is taking only half a pill orally, by mouth, once, maybe twice, a day. That's all he needs. That's a very good sign.

The former first lady, Nancy Reagan, of course, continues to be with the ex-president, at his side, glued to his side, as one of his aides put it.

Also, messages from all over the world continue coming in to the Reagans. Very heartening, some 6,000 at last count, e-mails coming in to the Reagan Foundation. Nancy Reagan saying letters, cards, phone calls and so forth from all over the world continue to come in.

HARRIS: Hey, Jim?

HILL: How long will the ex-president remain here? We are not sure. As of Saturday, the day of surgery, they've said seven to 10 days. So we hope to get an update sometime today.

HARRIS: Good deal. Thanks, Jim. TO ORDER A VIDEO OF THIS TRANSCRIPT, PLEASE CALL 800-CNN-NEWS OR USE OUR SECURE ONLINE ORDER FORM LOCATED AT www.fdch.com
