Bush Inauguration Brings New Style to Washington

Aired January 19, 2001 - 9:41 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: I'm Daryn Kagan in Washington, D.C. for the inauguration of George W. Bush. A new administration brings a new kind of celebrity to town.

To talk more about the kind of stars we should expect to see in the nation's capitol, here's Linda Kramer of "People" magazine. She's just a little bit away in our Washington, D.C. bureau.

Linda, we didn't want you to have to brave the elements to come here on top of the roof of the Labor Department.

Good morning; good to see you.

LINDA KRAMER, "PEOPLE" MAGAZINE: Good morning; good to see you, although I'm glad I'm not up there.

KAGAN: I bet you do. But, you know, we are dry and warm and toasty; so no complaints there.

Cover of "Washington Post" today -- it shows George W. Bush rocking out with Ricky Martin; and I think we saw some videotape of this earlier as well. Ricky, one of the biggest celebrities in town, but who else are we seeing for this weekend?

KRAMER: Well, it's interesting, because I was thinking, you know, eight years ago we were waiting for sightings of Annette Bening and Warren Beatty and this year we're waiting for sightings of Delta Burke and Gerald McGrainy (ph). But we're also going to see David Spade, Wayne Newton; a lot of Country Western -- looking around town for Clint Black and his pregnant wife Lisa Hartman Black.

So I guess glam is kind of in the eye of the beholder.

KAGAN: This is not your Clinton crowd, is it?

KRAMER: No, and I think that the people coming to celebrate George W. Bush's inauguration wouldn't want the Clinton Hollywood crowd.

KAGAN: Absolutely not.

Now, the style changes as well. Just a few minutes ago we had a live shot from the only Western wear shop here in Washington, D.C.; but a lot of Texans coming to town, and that changes the way that people dress up around here.

KRAMER: That's one of the things we're going to be looking for a lot this weekend. We want to see if there's a new sense of style in town with the Texans coming. On the other hand, we're hearing that you're not going to see a lot of these, sort of, stereotyped big Texas, platinum hair, because that's not the style of George W. and Laura Bush.

KAGAN: I don't know -- if you were in the airport last night...

KRAMER: Well, we do want to see what the quotient of minks will be because, you know, Aretha Franklin got a little grief eight years ago when she wore fur.

But we're hearing that there's going to be a very glamorous, refined look. Designers and dress shops are saying that the Republican women won't be showing quite as much skin. You'll see long gloves and shawls at a lot of these balls.

KRAMER: And for the men we were just showing some videotape of someone tying a bow tie. Does that mean that, if the Republicans are in town, the bow ties are back?

KRAMER: Well, your own Tucker Carlson might be able to...

KAGAN: That's true; Tucker could talk about bow ties.

KRAMER: ... to address that.

But, you know, the shops and the people in Washington are going out of their way, as you know, to help people. And Nordstrom's has bow tiers lined up on the curb tomorrow evening to help men who are a little bit bow challenged, to get their knots done.

KAGAN: And then there's the whole element of style of how you get here. There is a plethora of private jets in town.

KRAMER: Yes, we hear that there might be some traffic jams of private jets, although I don't know how the weather will affect that. And, of course, once you're here, getting around town -- if you haven't already reserved your limo, put on those rubber boots and start walking.

KAGAN: Well, I don't know about the limo, but I can tell you, because of the private jets -- there were so many private jets flying into Washington, D.C. my commercial airplane that I was on was delayed by three hours. They wouldn't even let us come into D.C.

There's a little story for you in "People" magazine.

KRAMER: Thank you.

KAGAN: Linda Kramer, "People" magazine, thanks for joining us; brave the weather and good luck on spotting celebrities here around town.

KRAMER: Well, have fun, too.

KAGAN: OK, great.
