Super Bowl XXXV: Ravens Fans To Hold Send-off Rally

Aired January 22, 2001 - 9:41 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: OK, there's going to be some big stories, some -- and big -- and big pictures coming out of Tampa, Florida, this week or coming up here on Super Bowl seek here.

And now that the president inauguration is over, sports fans near the nation's capital are concentrating on Super Bowl XXXV and all the hype that goes with this.

The Giants arrived in Tampa yesterday for Sunday's match-up with the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens, though, are set to arrive today, and they are getting a big send-off from their hometown fans.

Our Jeanne Meserve standing by from Baltimore's Inner Harbor, where Ravens fans will hold their send-off rally for their team this morning.

Jeanne, good morning.

JEANNE MESERVE, CNN ANCHOR: Good morning, Daryn.

A few years ago, this town didn't even have a professional football team. And now, they're sending their Ravens off to the Super Bowl, and they are psyched.

The town is being swept by what they call "purple passion." At night, 40 buildings here downtown Baltimore are bathed in purple light. Purple golden mean the colors of team. Someone from the city told me they wanted to light even more buildings in purple, but they couldn't get a hold of any purple jells.

There are "Go, Ravens" signs posted virtually everywhere you look. There's been a tremendous boom in Ravens' merchandise.

And as you mentioned. about an hour from now, there's going to be a rally here in the Inner Harbor.

The crowd started gathering very early in very cold temperatures. It's growing now. They are expecting a couple of thousand people here. The team will speak, coach Brian Billick and also owner Art Modell.

You may be able to make out behind me the vow of the U.S.S. Constitution. It's white, black, and green black there. This is the Civil War-era vessel, the only one still afloat, built in 1854. During this rally, there's going to be a countdown, a blast-off to Tampa. And as the crowd counts down and gets to zero, they are going to fire off the cannons from this 1854 ship. Also, the fire boats are going to be in the harbor as spewing the water that I suspect is going to be purple and gold as they get ready to go down to Tampa.

This is a city that's had its bruises. They lost their beloved Colts back in the 1980s. The NBC series "Homicide" emphasized the crime problems here. They've had a high murder rate; they've had a severe drop problem.

But today, this is all about celebration. This is all about sending the Ravens off to Super Bowl XXXV, what they call here in Baltimore, "festivus maximus." They are psyched. They are ready.

Daryn, back to you.

KAGAN: I believe that is a technical term there in sports: "festivus maximus."

Jeanne Meserve, thank you very much.
