Texas Escapees Lived Weeks in Colorado Campground; Two Remain at Large

Aired January 23, 2001 - 10:04 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Now, we turn to that prison escapee story -- this is the story about the Texas Seven, the so-called escapees there. The FBI officials said that they are intensifying their manhunt now for the two fugitives who remain at large this morning. All seven of the men are believed to have spent the last several weeks living in an RV campground in Woodland Park, Colorado. Four of the convicts were captured, and one is dead. Now the search narrows for the remaining two.

CNN's Frank Buckley is in Denver this morning -- he's got the latest on this developing story -- Frank.

FRANK BUCKLEY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Leon, the four men who are in custody will be arraigned here today at U.S. district court in Denver. These men were arrested, however, about 50 miles from this location, 50 miles southwest of Denver, in an area called Woodland Park, a rural area.

As you say, they had somehow purchased an RV and were living in an RV park. They also had with them a van and a jeep. They've been living in this RV park since January 1st, some of the residents of the park saying that at least one of these escaped convicts was attending Bible study.

The four men in custody now are Michael Rodriguez, Joseph Garcia, and the alleged ringleader of the group, George Rivas. Those three men were arrested as they approached a general store. Police had them under surveillance since Monday morning. Randy Halprin surrendered at the trailer park.

But Larry Harper barricaded himself inside a home in the park, and authorities say he eventually shot himself in the chest.

Two men remain at large. They are Patrick Murphy Jr. and Donald Newbury. They are believed to be armed because while investigators have found at least 13 guns, many more were stolen in the sports store robbery in Texas.

The men who are at last -- at large were last seen in a maroon or brown-colored mid-'70s or '80s Ford van, but authorities are skeptical about whether or not they would remain in that van, given the amount of publicity surrounding the case. They suspect that these escapees probably know that this van is being looked for, and they will probably move to a vehicle of another kind -- Leon.

HARRIS: All right, thanks, Frank Buckley, reporting live this morning, from Denver.
