Super Bowl XXXV: Giants, Ravens Fans Sound Off on Sunday's Matchup

Aired January 26, 2001 - 9:14 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Fans of the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Giants are gearing up for Sunday's Super Bowl. Now, besides fan support, the Giants also seem to have public opinion on their side. In a CNN/"USA Today"/Gallup Poll taken just a few days ago, 55 percent of those surveyed say that they think the Giants will win Super Bowl XXXV; 26 percent say the Ravens are going to be the winners.

Makes you wonder where they took that poll, huh?

All right, well, not only is Baltimore home to the Super Bowl- bound Ravens, it's also the backdrop of the acclaimed TV series "Homicide."

CNN's Eileen O'Connor is in the neighborhood that serves as the focal point for that show. But, you know, even there today, the big question is whether the Ravens can kill the Giants' hopes on Sunday -- Eileen.

EILEEN O'CONNOR, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, they all say that the Ravens will be on top, at least publicly. But privately, I'm going to talk to someone who has a little secret.

Doug Patterson.

DOUG PATTERSON, SECRET GIANTS FAN: Yes.

O'CONNOR: Just between you and I. No one's going to know.

PATTERSON: Well, I'm over here on the corner of Jimmy's Restaurant kind of keeping my head low.

O'CONNOR: Now, go on, tell me. What have you done?

PATTERSON: Well, you see, I've got this bet for four beers now. People have been taking me on really quick, like. And the deal is, see, I looked at the score and it was 41 to zip. You know, the Giants were on top, zero on that defense. Now, they've got a great defense and a super offense. And my hearts with the Ravens, but, listen, you know, the Giants have got a lock on this. That's what I think.

O'CONNOR: So it's mind over emotion? You are really hard core. PATTERSON: Yes, mind over emotion. That's where my bet on the beers are. I mean, I know who's going to win this thing. It'll be close, but I think they're going to take -- I know they're going to take it.

O'CONNOR: And with me as well is Edwin Van Dusen, who is your employee, Doug.

PATTERSON: Yes, that's right.

O'CONNOR: A little disagreement? Do you dare?

EDWIN VAN DUSEN, RAVENS FAN: Well, Doug is my boss so I have to watch what I say. But the Ravens are going to win this game. I know it in my heart. Doug is just angry because the Ravens beat his Oakland Raiders. He's a graduate of Oakland High School. He's very sore that the Raiders lost, and now he is channeling his allegiances to the Raiders to the Giants, which is understandable psychologically. But the Ravens are going to win this game. And Leon and Daryn, on Monday morning I expect you to tell the world that I was right.

O'CONNOR: And you had a question for Leon?

VAN DUSEN: Leon, who do you think's going to win?

O'CONNOR: OK, Leon.

HARRIS: Oh, don't put me on that. I got to tell you this: As a diehard, long-term Cleveland Brown's fan, there's a part of me that wants to see the Ravens do this because I would love to see Ozzie Newsome get a ring. So I don't know. I haven't made my mind yet.

O'CONNOR: He hasn't made up his mind.

(LAUGHTER)

You're a chicken.

HARRIS: All right. We'll check and see how these two guys are talking to each other Monday, Eileen. Thanks much -- Daryn.

O'CONNOR: OK, take care.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: It's come to that, the viewers taking over the show, putting us on the spot.

HARRIS: There you go. Well, we want interactive television, though.

KAGAN: We have it there. We've lost control.
