Emergency Management Employee Talks About Weather in Iowa

Aired January 29, 2001 - 11:05 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We have on the phone with us right now Bob Goldhammer. He's with the Iowa Emergency Management. And he is in Des Moine.

Bob, I understand you guys are having a rough morning there because of ice?

BOB GOLDHAMMER, IOWA EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT: Well, fortunately, here in the Des Moines area, we are below the freezing line, meaning we are south of the freezing line, so we're getting rain right now, and it's not freezing.

KAGAN: So that's good news.

GOLDHAMMER: That's good news for us.

KAGAN: But outside or farther north from you, what are you hearing?

GOLDHAMMER: Well, they are getting some icing further north. Haven't really heard a lot of problems specifically, so don't have anything to report, but at least in the metro area, we're just monitoring the situation and preparing to handle whatever comes along.

KAGAN: What are you expecting?

GOLDHAMMER: They're forecasting ice later on and then changing over to snow probably this evening, with one to three inches. Not really too bad, actually: Unfortunately, for Iowa, that's normal weather sometimes.

KAGAN: And unlike here in Atlanta, you guys know how to drive in all that?

GOLDHAMMER: Well, we have had quite a few people that were sliding off the road yesterday during the snowfall we had, but at last so far today, the roads seem to be wet, and cars and buses are moving OK.

KAGAN: Well, for now, what it good -- as you said, worse weather could be on the way, but it appears, for now, in terms of ice, you guys are doing just fine.

Bob Goldhammer from Iowa Emergency Management, thank you very much for that report.
