'Gadget Guy' Ed Curran Showcases Latest Digital Cameras

Aired February 21, 2001 - 11:49 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Well, guess what?

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: What?

HARRIS: Our Gadget Guy, Ed Curran, has got some cameras he wants to show off this morning.

KAGAN: Funny how that works.

Hi, Ed. He's in Chicago today.

ED CURRAN, GADGET GUY: Hi, how are you?

KAGAN: Good.

CURRAN: You know, digital cameras are finally ready for prime time. I mean, they can really give you fantastic photo images.

And about a week ago, the Photo Marketing Association had their big convention. And part of their convention, a division of Photo Marketing Association called the Digital Image Marketing Association, has a digital camera shootout. So they came up with cameras in different categories that scored best when they did their digital photo shootout. And we have some of those cameras here.

The one that I'm holding in my hand...

KAGAN: Look like a real camera.

CURRAN: Yes, one of your classic, single lens reflex cameras. And it's no wonder that this one would do so well. This one's from Olympus, and this is the E-10 from Olympus. And -- now, when we talk cameras that are digital, we talk megapixels. The more megapixels, the better you can blow up the print because there's lots of information.

KAGAN: Ah, good to keep in mind.

CURRAN: Four megapixels.

KAGAN: So what's the number on this one -- four.

CURRAN: Four megapixels, 4.1. But this baby goes for two grand.

(LAUGHTER)

CURRAN: So that's a wonderful camera.

KAGAN: For two grand, you better be getting four megapixels.

HARRIS: Yes, how much is that per pixel?

CURRAN: Well, it's about $1,900, so you can do the math there. It's pretty expensive.

Here's another one from Olympus. And this scored at the top of the pack when it came to the $550 to $750 range. This particular camera has a 1.8 lens, F-1.8, which means nice bright lens, lets a lot of light into the camera. A really cool camera in the $550 to $750 range. This is an outstanding unit, the 2040 Zoom from Olympus. Now this...

KAGAN: How many megapixels on that one?

CURRAN: 2.1 megapixels.

KAGAN: OK.

CURRAN: In fact, the next cameras we'll show will all be 2.1 megapixels. This is one from Sony. It's brand new. It's one of Sony's CyberShot cameras and its 2.1 megapixels. You've got your screen on the back here.

The neat thing about this is they've incorporated a special battery management in here. When you're using these little LCD screens on the back, they really suck up a lot of power. And this works on two AA batteries and it works for an hour on two AAs. So that's very, very good for a digital camera. This one is $500 and this just coming out from Sony.

This is from Hewlett Packard, again 2.1 megapixels. It's got a smaller lens, though, so you don't have quite as much light that you're collecting here. This is a neat little camera. Doesn't have quite all the bells and whistles, but, again, keep in mind, in these price ranges -- this one goes for $300 -- it won in the digital photo shootout. So if you're looking for a camera and you know it's got good features and good pictures -- that's what they judge on, not just a good picture, but also good features for the money.

KAGAN: And coming down into a decent price range.

CURRAN: Yes, really neat for 2.1 megapixels, which, by the way, give you just a gorgeous picture. This really does a very good job.

This is the Kodak for $250, which does a nice job. Not a lot of bells and whistles, but this won in its category, the 3200 from Kodak.

But finally, I want to show you this little guy here. This beautiful little camera from Crystal Digital won. And this camera sells for $99.

KAGAN: Really?

HARRIS: No kidding.

KAGAN: A digital camera for $99.

CURRAN: For $99, just out there, the dual shot. And it's really great. And take a look at this picture.

HARRIS: How does it compare, though?

CURRAN: This is a photograph...

HARRIS: There you go.

CURRAN: ... taken by this camera, the winning photograph from this contest. So you see you don't have to spend a ton of money to take great digital pictures.

KAGAN: Very informative. Pretty as a picture. Thank you so much, Ed Curran in Chicago.

CURRAN: Thank you.

HARRIS: All right, good deal.
