Dale Earnhardt 1951-2001: Friends, NASCAR Participants to Gather to Remember Racing Great in Private Ceremony

Aired February 22, 2001 - 9:31 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Friends and fellow drivers gather in Charlotte, North Carolina, today to remember racing great Dale Earnhardt. That will take place a few hours from now. His family says their farewells -- they, actually, said their farewells, in a private ceremony yesterday.

CNN's Brian Cabell is at the Calvary Church, where today's memorial service begins at noon Eastern.

Brian, I understand this is a huge church, and every seat probably will be taken?

BRIAN CABELL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: I would suspect so. It's a cold, rainy, dreary day, though, here, Daryn. It's -- the door's open in about a half hour, and the service, as you said, gets started about at 12:00. Only going to be about a half hour, but CNN will be carrying that service live.

This is, however, invitation only, open only to the so-called NASCAR community. It's a huge church, as you say, about 5,000 seats, we're told, perhaps even more than that. Flowers have been arriving for the last 24 hours, from all over the United States. Invitation only that is to drivers, to pit crews, to racing teams, to people involved with NASCAR, the business interests. The Earnhardt family has been invited to this memorial service as well. They're expected to attend.

Now, some questions have been raised over the last couple of days: What's going to happen to Dale Earnhardt's car, the No. 3, the black car? Those questions may be answered tomorrow. A lot of fans want to see that car retired, but in the meantime, Dale Earnhardt's team will be racing with another driver, in Rockingham, this Sunday. That's about two hours from here. His name, 25-year-old Kevin Harvick, an up-and-coming young driver.

Now, for the fans that can't get into this memorial service this morning, later on today, at noontime, there will be another service, on Sunday night, in Kannapolis. That's Dale Earnhardt's hometown. It will be at a minor league baseball stadium, the home of the Kannapolis Intimidators. That was a team that Dale Earnhardt recently bought an interest in. That will be Sunday night. There's about 5,000 people can get into that stadium; they can probably squeeze more into that. But again, if they can't get into this memorial service, and a lot of people want to go, then they will be able to celebrate his life and mourn his death this Sunday night.

I'm Brian Cabell, CNN, live in Charlotte, North Carolina.

KAGAN: Brian, thank you very much.
