'New York Post': Final, Commemorative Issue of 'George' Magazine 'Tastefully Done'

Aired February 27, 2001 - 10:21 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: If you're a fan of the magazine launched by the late JFK Jr., you may want to go out and buy a copy soon. The publisher says the March issue of "George" is the last. The final publication is a special commemorative issue.

And joining us now to talk about the end of "George" is Keith Kelly. He's a reporter for the "New York Post."

Good morning, Keith.

KEITH KELLY, "NEW YORK POST": Good morning.

PHILLIPS: Let's start out and talk about JFK Jr.'s mission when he launched this magazine. What was it?

KELLY: Well, it was basically to capture the melding of politics and pop culture, which five or six years ago was a novel idea. And now it seems like it's pretty mainstream. I guess he himself was the living embodiment of pop culture: the sexiest man alive, the sign of a great political dynasty. So he knew of what he spoke.

PHILLIPS: What's the talk among coworkers? What was he like to work with?

KELLY: From what I gather, he was extremely down to earth. My dealings with him, he -- even when he was annoyed with some of the things the "Post" wrote over the years, he had a way of diffusing it with a funny note that he'd drop us, or a -- you know, a very sense of humor, getting everything back on an even keel, very respectful, very down to earth. Great, great guy.

PHILLIPS: Let's talk about the last issue. What do you think stands out?

KELLY: Well it's a real -- it has the best of some of the old, some of the controversial editorials: John's famous editorial where he called his two cousins "poster boys for bad behavior." They did not run the nude photo or the seminude photo. John sent us a funny note after one of our stories on that one, claiming it was -- he was not nude and perhaps we spent too much time in Catholic school -- a sense of humor.

They also had a great roundup of the 50 power brokers in Washington. So there's current stuff. And interestingly enough, Cheney and Powell and Greenspan all outrank George W. Bush in the "George" ranking of the power elite.

PHILLIPS: Wow.

KELLY: So there's a lot of new material there, as well as some of the best of the old interviews with George Wallace, and just a great potpourri of selections.

PHILLIPS: Now, JFK Jr. was pretty humble. He didn't want to ever be on the cover of this magazine or be featured in this magazine, right?

KELLY: That's correct. The CEO -- former CEO had -- when they were running into a little bit of a circulation slide about halfway through, beseeched him to get on the cover, sort of like Martha Stewart, get on there. When the brand is established you can get off. But he never -- absolutely, flatly refused to do that. So it is going to be, I guess, a little bit of a contentious point for the Kennedy family, who sold off their interest, to now see in the farewell issue John's photo on the cover. But I think it is very tastefully done. So, you know, I'm not sure if they're objecting to that or not. But certainly John never would have liked it.

PHILLIPS: Well, Keith Kelly, "New York Post," if tastefully done, I'm sure he would appreciate the farewell issue of "George." Thanks for being with us and talking about it.

KELLY: Enjoyed it. Thank you.

PHILLIPS: All right.
