Matthew Perry Enters Rehab; Roberts, Pitt Star in 'The Mexican'

Aired February 27, 2001 - 10:40 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Let's move on and check showbiz news this morning.

One "Friends" star's on amends, and another, a husband of another stars with Julia Roberts in the big scene.

We've got CNN's Michael Okwu in New York now with today's showbiz news.

Good morning, Michael.

MICHAEL OKWU, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Leon, Kyra, thanks, and good morning.

One of the stars of the TV hit "Friends" is, in fact, in rehab this morning. Matthew Perry entered treatment at a rehabilitation hospital for an undisclosed condition. A statement yesterday from the 32-year-old actor's publicist said only that Perry was following the advice of his doctors. In 1997, Perry was hospitalized when he became addicted to painkillers.

On a much lighter note, a new comedy coming to theaters this week pairs two of Hollywood's most bankable names on the big screen for the first time. Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts rendezvous in "The Mexican."

And as CNN's Sherri Sylvester reports, for the actors, going south of the border was a long-planned trip.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

SHERRI SYLVESTER, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt had wanted to work together for years. That's understandable.

But they've got some explaining to do as to why they chose "The Mexican." It was only budgeted at $8 million. The planned location was remote, reachable only via a 1.5-mile tunnel.

The director, Gore Verbinski, was known for his Budweiser bullfrog commercials and his one film, "Mouse Hunt."

Pitt's vote went for Gore and his vision. BRAD PITT, ACTOR: A loose, low-budget, down-and-dirty, hand-held film without any control. And he was totally into the spirit of that. He kind of led the way.

SYLVESTER (voice-over): And you guys had to do a loose, low- budget, down-and-dirty, non-Hollywood thing?

PITT: Yes, that's what was interesting for me.

SYLVESTER: Yes, did you like that?

JULIA ROBERTS, ACTRESS: Loved, loved it. You know, when you're out there in the elements and it's all about -- you know, there's no shade for 57 miles, and it's 110 degrees. And, you know, you haven't really slept in about -- I mean, I didn't even sleep on this movie. I just would say, I'm going for my nap now. I mean, it wasn't even about sleeping. It was just about trying to do about 75 days work in about 55 days.

PITT: We were in this place called Real de Catorce. It was at the top of this mountain range in an old defunct mining town, out of time. And a really romantic place. It was just gorgeous.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "The Mexican")

ROBERTS: I,, I,, I.

PITT: Come on, baby.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

SYLVESTER: So, when the two of you sat down to work on these characters, did you create a history for this couple?

ROBERTS: I have to credit you, my friend here.

PITT: Really?

ROBERTS: Yes, because Brad sort of dragged me into it. I'm not a big backstory gal. and he kept asking me, What do you think about this? What do you think is the answer to this?

PITT: Did I?

ROBERTS: Yes.

PITT: Really?

ROBERTS: Almost to the point of...

PITT: Never...

ROBERTS: ... harassment, where I really had to think about it. We really conversed about it.

ROBERTS: But it evolved into something quite interesting. SYLVESTER (voice-over): And at the end of the day, work turned to play.

ROBERTS: One night, I brought out my guitar, and one of the guys from the art department started playing it. He was just a master. I mean, it was unbelievable.

SYLVESTER (on camera): Did you guys come up with a song?

PITT: We came up with...

ROBERTS: So many.

PITT: ... many songs. In fact, we started a band, "We're Hitting The Road." There will be a VH-1 "Behind The Music" very soon.

ROBERTS: Yes, Dogstar, watch out.

SYLVESTER: Dogstar.

PITT: We're on your heels, Keanu.

SYLVESTER (voice-over): The two continue making beautiful music together. They co-star in the upcoming "Oceans 11."

Sherri Sylvester, CNN entertainment news, Hollywood.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

OKWU: That's our closing note.

I'm Michael Okwu, reporting from New York.

Back to you, Leon, in Atlanta.

HARRIS: All right, good deal. Thanks, Michael.
