WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Clinton administration is calling on the Supreme Court to say terminally ill patients have no constitutional right to physician-assisted suicide.

The Justice Department filed a legal brief Tuesday, arguing that New York and Washington state laws prohibiting physician-assisted suicide should be reinstated. Lower federal courts struck down both statutes.

The Supreme Court is expected to hear oral arguments early next year on whether a state can outlaw physician-assisted suicide. A decision is expected by the end of June.

The American Medical Association and 20 states also filed papers with the Supreme Court by Tuesday's deadline, arguing against legalizing physician-assisted suicide.
