FBI looks at sabotage as possible cause of TWA crash
November 26, 1996 NEW YORK (CNN) -- A law enforcement source said Monday that the FBI is investigating whether a saboteur could have been responsible for the explosion that destroyed TWA Flight 800 four months ago. The source said the agency was investigating the possibility that someone planted an explosive device on the plane, or tampered with the jet's electronic or mechanical systems. But FBI spokesman Jim Margolin told CNN that "there is nothing new" in the FBI's investigation of possible sabotage, and cautioned against making too much out of the revelation that the agency was still looking into that possibility. The Boeing 747, en route to Paris from New York, crashed shortly after takeoff on July 17, killing all 230 people aboard. The FBI has contended from the start of the investigation that there are three possible causes for the explosion: a bomb, a missile, or mechanical failure. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Special Section:Related stories:
