Police probe Kevorkian links to 2 deaths
February 3, 1997 PONTIAC, Michigan (CNN) -- The body of a woman was found Monday inside Dr. Jack Kevorkian's van, which was parked outside a medical examiner's office. Two hours earlier, the body of another woman was dropped off at a hospital often used by Kevorkian following an assisted suicide. Police confirmed they were investigating whether Kevorkian is linked to either of the deaths. Lt. Robert Smith of the Oakland County Sheriff's Department said the body of an unidentified white female was found in Kevorkian's battered 1968 Volkswagen van, but said the department had not concluded Kevorkian was involved. The second body was left at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital about 12:44 a.m. Monday by another woman who identified herself as a friend. "She denied any connection with Dr. Kevorkian at the time," said Dr. Robert Aranosian, director of emergency at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital, where Kevorkian has delivered the bodies of some assisted suicides. The woman told emergency room doctors that she was driving around and her friend stopped breathing. The dead woman was identified as a 42-year-old white female from New Jersey. Her name is being withheld pending contact with her family. Kevorkian has assisted at 45 known suicides since 1990, and has been tried an acquitted three times on charges relating to his activities. Last month, Oakland County's new prosecutor dropped 19 charges brought against the doctor by his predecessor, but two other Michigan counties have filed new charges.
