McVeigh trial to start March 31, as planned

DENVER (CNN) -- The trial for Oklahoma City bombing suspect Timothy McVeigh will begin March 31 as scheduled, attorneys on both sides said Tuesday after meeting with federal Judge Richard Matsch. Lead defense attorney Stephen Jones did not ask for a delay, as he had suggested he might.
The development follows days of publicity surrounding a Dallas Morning News story, reporting that a defense document showed McVeigh had told attorneys he had driven the truck carrying the bomb.
Jones claims the document, which the newspaper used as the basis for its story, was made up by the defense to get a potential witness to talk with them.
Jones said he is "comfortable" with the decision to begin the trial March 31. McVeigh and Terry Nichols are charged with terrorism, murder and conspiracy in the April 19, 1995, bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building in Oklahoma City that killed 168 people. Nichols will be tried later.
