U.S., North Korea agree to dig for MIAsMay 15, 1997Web posted at: 11:30 p.m. EDT WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. and North Korean negotiators during meetings last week in New York "agreed to conduct three joint recovery operations in 1997" in North Korea in an effort to locate the remains of U.S. military personnel missing since the 1950-1953 Korean War, the Pentagon announced Thursday. The groups also agreed "in principle" to conduct an "archival investigation" in an effort to account for those missing in action since the war. No agreement was reached regarding a U.S. request to interview six U.S. troops who apparently defected to North Korea since the end of the war. A Pentagon official said they believe four of the six are alive. Related stories:
