Pentagon chief defends mixed-gender military
May 18, 1997Web posted at: 11:51 p.m. EDT (0351 GMT) CLAREMONT, California (CNN) -- Responding to a spat of sex scandals that have plagued the U.S. military, the Pentagon's top official Sunday defended the mixed-gender military, saying the system is not to blame for recent problems. "The system is working well," Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. John Shalikashvili told ABC'S "This Week," "it's the people who have failed." A bill before Congress would require all of the services to separate men and women during training, as the Marine Corps does now. But Shalikashvili called mixed gender training "advantageous." Charges of sexual misconduct recently have been leveled against everyone from drill sergeants and the nation's first female B-52 pilot to the highest ranking enlisted man in the Army.
