STAMPS, Arkansas (CNN) -- Two students were shot and wounded in the legs near Stamps High School Monday, police said, adding that the wounds were not life-threatening.

The students, a 17-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, were standing in the school parking lot at the time of the shooting.

A wooded area near the school was sealed off by police and sheriff's deputies, who called for dog teams to help them search the area.

Sherry Kennedy of the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department said the wounds to the two students "appeared to be small caliber." She said the students' vital signs were stable when they reached Magnolia Hospital in nearby Magnolia.

Stamps High School was closed around 9:30 a.m. and parents were told they could come to the school to pick up their children.

Stamps, population 2,500, is located about 120 miles southwest of Little Rock.
