Gore remembers John Holliman's 'warm heart'

Holliman

Services to be Wednesday

Web posted at: 9:22 a.m. EDT (1322 GMT)

ATLANTA (CNN) -- Vice President Al Gore joined viewers around the world in mourning CNN Correspondent John Holliman, praising him for his "optimism, his dedication to journalism, and his warm heart."

Holliman, 49, was killed Saturday morning in a car crash near his suburban Atlanta home. He is survived by his wife, Diane, and 5-year old son, Jay.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday at the Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. The family is also planning a service in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, where Holliman wanted to be buried -- and where the Hollimans lived before moving to Georgia.

In a written statement issued Saturday, Gore said he and his wife, Tipper, were "deeply saddened" by Holliman's death.

Gore went on to say, "Whether Mr. Holliman was reporting live from Baghdad, covering the student uprising in Tiananmen Square, or covering the space program more thoroughly than it has ever been covered, his passion for his work and family and his outstanding journalism clearly made a difference in the lives of many people."

Viewers call Holliman 'true in spirit'

CNN viewers shared their memories of Holliman with phone calls, and with messages on the CNN Interactive Web site.

Some remembered his reports from Iraq, as one of the "Boys from Baghdad," while others praised his enthusiastic coverage of the space program.

"I feel like I lost a member of my family," one caller said.

Another said, "We are going to miss him. He was so true in spirit." Another caller asked if there were plans to set up a journalism scholarship in Holliman's name.

Fellow journalists and viewers also posted messages on CNN Interactive's message board, using such terms as "believable and trustworthy" to praise Holliman.

Several mentioned that Holliman and Walter Cronkite were scheduled to be co-anchors on CNN next month, when John Glenn returns to space.

One viewer posted this message:

"I did not know Walter Cronkite and Mr. Holliman were going to cover the ... launch of Sen. Glenn. That would have been an event in itself. Two of the best in the business covering an historic launch. Mr. Holliman is going to have the best seat in the house for Sen. Glenn's adventure."
