April 8, 1999 CAPAC, Michigan (CNN) -- Relatives of Army Staff Sgt. Christopher Stone, one of three U.S. soldiers being held in Yugoslavia, are waiting and hoping that the mission to secure their release is successful. "It's been really rough, but everyone's been so good to us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the other captives that are with my brother," said Dawn Reliford. Spyros Kyprianou, speaker of the Cypriot Parliament, flew to Belgrade Thursday, saying he was unsure whether he would be able to win the freedom of the three. Kyprianou is expected to meet with Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic Friday morning. Stone's brother-in-law, Michael Reliford, said Stone's family would like to join him in Europe as soon as possible if he is released. "We really want to. We want to do the best we can to get there. Of course, we're not financially capable of doing it, but we're going to try and get there and be with him, you know, because he needs us there," said Reliford. He said the ordeal has taught the family a lesson about keeping closer contact. "I know he's in the military and he's got to do what he's got to do, but we all need to get tighter and stay a little bit closer, because you don't know what's going to happen." Stone, 25, of Smiths Creek, Michigan; Army Spec. Steven Gonzales, 21, of Huntsville, Texas; and Staff Sgt. Andrew Ramirez, 24, of Los Angeles, were taken into custody March 31 along the Yugoslav-Macedonian border. In Huntsville, Gonzales' parents continue monitoring the latest news reports concerning the mission. Rosie and Gilbert Gonzales have also received thousands of e-mails accessed through a computer provided by the Army. If their son is released, they also plan to join him in Europe as soon as possible, aacording to family spokesman Larry Fitzgerald. His release would be very timely -- he turns 22 on Saturday.
