JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- Tens of thousands of East
Timorese welcomed Bishop Carlos Belo back to East Timor from
Indonesia Saturday. The throngs gathered at Dili's Cathedral
to hear the Nobel laureate, who was awarded the peace prize
with East Timorese activist Jose Ramos Horta.
Belo urged the East Timorese to stop daily protests that
began more than a week ago, after the Indonesian government
criticized the bishop for remarks he allegedly made in a
German magazine.
Belo has refused to comment on the article until he sees it.
In the report, he reportedly says Indonesian troops treated
East Timorese like "dogs."
