ALGERIA (CNN) -- Two bombs have wounded 18 people, two of
them seriously, in northeastern Algeria, Algerian newspapers
said on Monday.
One of the bombs outside the capital, planted on a road in
the coastal region of Kolea, 25 miles (40 km) west of
Algiers, went off on Sunday hitting a vehicle carrying
workers, said El Watan newspaper. The blast wounded 10
people, including two seriously, it said.
Eight villagers were wounded on Saturday when a bomb exploded
under the truck in which they were traveling in Zinedine, a
village 75 miles southwest of Algiers, said Liberte
newspaper. Twenty-eight people in the same region were
killed early Sunday by Muslim fundamentalists, Algerian
security forces reported.
Also on Sunday, security forces said a bomb in an Algiers
cafe wounded 20 people. However, hospital and other sources
said the cafe blast wounded 53 and the newspaper
l'Authentique said on Monday that one of these had since
died.
About 60,000 people have been killed in Algeria since early
1992 when authorities canceled a general election in which
Islamists had taken a commanding first-round lead.
