U.S. presses Italy to find convicted terrorist

ROME (CNN) -- U.S. officials pressed the Italian government Tuesday to recapture the Palestinian terrorist convicted of killing an American during a 1985 ship hijacking.

Youssef Magied al-Molqi disappeared on February 26 when he was released on a 12-day furlough from Rebibbia, a high-security prison in Rome.

The U.S. ambassador met with Premier Lamberto Dini and expressed Washington's displeasure. Embassy officials wanted to know why the convicted terrorist was allowed to go out on a good-conduct pass.

Italy's foreign minister, Susanna Agnelli, said al-Molqi's temporary release fell within Italian law.

Al-Molqi, 34, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for hijacking the cruise ship Achille Lauro, shooting passenger Leon Klinghoffer, who was in a wheelchair, and ordering one of the ship's employees to push him and the chair overboard.

TOKYO, Japan (CNN) -- Northern Japan's Mount Komagatake spewed smoke and ash into the air late Tuesday, forcing schools to close and some residents to leave their homes.

Officials said there could be a full-scale eruption in the next several days. About 20 schools called off classes, and some 20 local residents were evacuated. (229K QuickTime movie)

Local authorities said the volcano, about 560 miles north of Tokyo, sent smoke 500 feet in the air when it became active late Tuesday.

The 3,710-foot-high volcano also erupted in 1929, killing two people.
