May Weather FX Blog
Weather knows no borders. It’s something I have said before now on-air, but never has it been more true than with the events of the past month. Just days after Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar, China suffered its worst earthquake in over 30 years and in the United States an unusually severe, killer tornado season has begun. May 2008 will long be remembered as one of the worst months for natural disasters.

Cyclone Nargis will go down in history as one of the deadliest tropical cyclones of all time. With the unofficial death toll of 100,000 people and over 200,000 missing, it currently ranks as the 10th deadliest storm in world history, but as aid efforts continue to be blocked, that death toll could rise further making Cyclone Nargis second only to the Great Bhola Cyclone of 1970 which struck Bangledesh, killing close to half a million people.

With the onset of the Southwest Monsoon season, weather conditions across Myanmar will only worsen, heavy rain and flooding will compound the misery and increase the risk of disease for the hundreds of thousands of survivors.

This month on Weather FX, we focus on severe weather and in particular – severe thunderstorms. What makes some parts of the world more vulnerable than others? Why and how does a tornado form? Just how dangerous is lightning and where does it strike most? These are a few of the questions we hope to answer in this month’s show, at the same time we’ll give you some tips on how to stay safe when a severe thunderstorm is heading your way.

All across the northern hemisphere as the summer months beckon, we start to plan outdoor activities, anything from a simple family picnic, a golfing tournament, to a small village fete or a large town festival. The weather does not discriminate, affecting each and every one of us. We can’t prevent the weather, but we can go a long way to prevent placing ourselves in harms way…….

So, tune in to the show, then head outdoors to make the most of the coming months ... and, enjoy ...
Hi! This is Rajesh Sundaresan from India. I watched the Weather fx programme and the tips given were very useful.
I got a doubt. If am not wrong, I heard her saying that if a thunder is heard, there is a risk of a lightning attack in the next half an hour. But it's the lightning that comes first followed by the thunder sound in a few seconds because light travels faster than sound.
Please clarfiy me in this regard and am extremely sorry if am anywhere wrong.
Regards,
Rajesh.S
I enjoyed the show about severe weather very much. However, on the quiz about the country which receives the most lightning strikes, you have misspelled the name of one of the countries. It is Colombia not Columbia.
I don't know why they don't just make a pipe system, set up so when theirs flooding in a area. The waters pumped into a area where it's needed. like some lake that have been so low for, so long that it's theatening to dry up. They can send oil through pipes, why not water.
I know why people prefer overseas trip going to sunny regions I'm traveling to Egypt next Sunday. I was encouraged by Egyptmates.com, where Egypt lovers from all over the world get to meet and share their passion and interests.
Hi there!

I live in Tampico, Tamaulipas MEXICO. Since 1985, aprox. i use to hear that in the coast of the Gulf of México, in front of Mirmar Beach, there are UFO bases and the high intelligencies are protecting the mexican coast of the effects of meteorological phenomena.
I would like you to give me more information about it.
The mexican journalist, Jaime Mausan, also investigative reporter of UFO phenomena, use to publish this kind of information.
One of the facts that could prove that version is that GILBERTO, as we knew a huracan, did not hit our coasts, but hit on the Sierra Madre Oriental on the state of NUEVO LEON, a very strange case.
Thanks for your attention.

You people are really unreal, I am sitting here watching the weather on cnn, and when you mention Gustav, you do not even mention Mississippi, it seems all you are concerned with is New Orleans. We, here in Mississippi are also concerend about Gustav's path and where it may hit as well..., just like New Orleans is, we are also. But you people act as if we do not even exist.
