Description of government structure:
  • Assemblies: Russia has a bicameral Federal Assembly that consists of the 178-member Federation Council (Soviet Federatsii) and the 450-member State Duma (Gosudarstvennaya Duma).
Description of electoral system:
  • The president is directly elected by popular vote for a four-year term.
  • The 178 seats of the Federation Council are filled by heads of top executive and legislative bodies of the 89 Federal Administrative Units of the Russian Federation.  All members serve four-year terms.
  • The 450 members of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation are directly elected by popular vote for four-year terms – 225 members are elected in single-mandate election districts and 225 members are elected in the federal election district through party lists.
