60 dead, hundreds injured in high-speed German train crash

June 3, 1998
Web posted at: 8:05 a.m. EDT (1205 GMT)

ESCHEDE, Germany (CNN) -- At least 60 people were reported to have been killed and 200 others injured when a high-speed InterCity Express (ICE) passenger train struck a car that had crashed onto the tracks near the northern town of Celle Wednesday morning, officials at the scene said.

Witnesses were quoted as saying the car had smashed through the central divide of the road bridge at the small town of Eschede and plunged onto the rail tracks. The train derailed and plowed into a bridge support.

The entire structure collapsed, burying part of the train under the debris and trapping a number of passengers, rescue officials said.

The exact number of deaths and injured was still unclear, as was the number of people aboard the train. Some estimates put the number of passengers as high as 300.

All 13 coaches of the train were telescoped into one another by the impact, officials said, and the bodies of dead passengers were strewn about the scene.

Fire, police and army rescue services were on hand, using helicopters to take the injured to hospitals.

The train had left Hanover on its way from Munich to the port city of Hamburg, and according to some reports was traveling at a speed of about 200 km/h (125 mph).

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.
