8 killed in Scotland plane crash
September 3, 1999 GLASGOW, Scotland -- A light aircraft crashed Friday in a field near Glasgow, killing eight people, police said. Three survivors were taken to two area hospitals, according to Monica Harkins, the spokeswoman for the Strathclyde Police. The Civil Aviation Authority said the plane was a twin-engine Cessna 404 believed to belong to a company called Edinburgh Air Charters. The plane was en route from Glasgow to Aberdeen, the agency said. A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said the plane was on fire at the scene near Paisley, close to Glasgow Airport. Harkins said it was not immediately apparent why the plane crashed. There were 11 passengers and crew on board, according to Constable Tom Ferris of the Strathclyde police. The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report. RELATED SITES: UK: Civil Aviation Authority
