Comrades in space: Lessons learned from shuttle/Mir missions

June 16, 1998
Web posted at: 2:00 p.m. EDT

(CNN) -- When Vice President Al Gore and Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin signed a space cooperation agreement, nobody knew how it would turn out. The former Soviets and the United States, enemies since the end of WWII, were trying to do something together...explore the universe.

The result of that agreement was a series of space flights with cosmonauts on the space shuttle, and astronauts going to Mir, the flagship of the Russian space fleet. Now that the program is over, CNN's John Holliman looks at what it did and did not accomplish.
